Born and raised in London, Ted Black trained at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is now based in Vienna, as a member of the Young Artist Programme at the Wiener Staatsoper. A Samling Artist, his operatic roles include Ferrando (Così fan Tutte) and Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), at Opera Wrocław in southern Poland, Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) at Opera Zuid in the Netherlands, Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) for Dorset Opera, and Gonzalve (L’heure Espagnole) at the RCM. He is a current laureate of the Académie Orsay-Royaumont, giving regular recitals at the Musée d’Orsay and at the Abbaye Royaumont, just north of Paris. In connection with the Royaumont foundation, he is the recipient of this years ‘Entretiens de Royaumont’ award, and will be giving a recital tour around France next Spring/Summer, with his duo partner, Dylan Perez. This tour will also include his Wigmore Hall debut, in September 2023.

Ted has found success in numerous competitions, winning first place in the 2019 Lies Askonas Competition, was a finalist in the 2020 Kathleen Ferrier Award and the 2021 Royal Overseas Competition, and most recently a semi-finalist in the 2022 Paris Opera Competition.

Future plans include the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition in Dublin, and the final of the Opera Festival Scotland Young Artists Singing Competition, accompanied by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Roles in the 22/23 season at the Wiener Staatsoper include Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Borsa (Rigoletto), Ulrich Eißlinger (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Messenger (Aida), and Eurimaco (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria).
